AC Koi Biological Pillar: An All-in-One Filtration Innovation for a Self-Sustaining Koi Pond Ecosystem

Update time: 26-06-05    Views: 1

Koi are often called “living jewels.” They are robust and brilliantly coloured, but maintaining excellent water quality is the most critical task for any koi keeper. Koi have high metabolisms and produce a large amount of waste. Leftover feed and faeces quickly break down into ammonia (NH₃) and nitrite (NO₂⁻) – both highly toxic to fish. Even low concentrations can cause stress, colour fading, and even death.

In nature, nitrifying bacteria convert ammonia to nitrite, and then to much less toxic nitrate through the nitrogen cycle. But in a closed koi pond, there is not enough surface area for these beneficial microbes to colonise. That is why a professional filtration system is essential to establish a stable biological filter.

The Problem with Traditional Filtration: Separated Designs

For many years, koi pond filtration has relied on a two-stage “physical + biological” approach – first mechanical media (like Japanese mat or brushes) to trap solids, then biological media (like ceramic rings or bio balls) to grow nitrifying bacteria. While effective, this separated design has several drawbacks:

- Large space requirement – Physical and biological chambers take up significant space in the filter pit, which is a major issue for garden ponds or compact filter compartments.

- Inconvenient installation & maintenance – Different media must be stacked and cleaned separately. Worse, cleaning the mechanical stage often washes away some of the nitrifying bacteria, and biological media then require a long time to re-establish the colony.

- Lack of standardisation – When hobbyists mix and match Japanese mat, bio balls, and ceramic rings, the filtration efficiency varies greatly. Beginners often have to experiment for months to find the right combination for their pond.

To solve these problems, AC AquaClean – relying on the R&D strength of a national industrial ceramics research centre – developed the AC Koi Biological Pillar (Patent No. 2024204437079). It is an integrated physical + biological filter media that completely rethinks how koi ponds are filtered.

Patented Design: Inner & Outer Ring Structure – One Pillar, One Independent Filtration System

The core innovation of the Koi Biological Pillar is its inner & outer ring structure: the outer layer is spiral Japanese mat (spiral filter mat) and the inner core is biological filter media. Both are integrated into a single cylindrical unit. Each pillar is a complete, independent filtration system.

As pond water flows through the pillar, it is purified step by step from the outside to the inside:

- Outer spiral mat (mechanical filtration) – Made of fibre, the spiral layer effectively traps large particles, fish waste, and uneaten food while maintaining excellent water flow. The material is free from fluorescent brighteners, ensuring biological safety.

- Inner biological core (biological filtration) – The core provides an extremely high specific surface area, offering an ideal home for nitrifying bacteria (Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter). A stable nitrogen cycle is quickly established, efficiently breaking down ammonia and nitrite.

This design breaks away from the traditional “Japanese mat first, then bio-media” sequence. Two filtration stages are now combined in one independent, space-saving pillar.

Two Versions for Different Water Quality Needs

To meet the requirements of different ponds, the Koi Biological Pillar is available in two versions:

- Model A (Organic bio-media core) – The inner core uses high‑surface‑area organic bio-media, providing massive space for nitrifying bacteria. Excellent for new pond start‑up or high‑stocking density.

- Model B (Natural mineral core) – The inner core is filled with natural mineral media. While stabilising beneficial bacteria colonies, it continuously releases calcium, magnesium, and trace elements. This helps stabilise pH, improves general hardness (GH), and promotes koi bone development and colour expression.

For optimum performance, arrange the pillars in an A‑B‑A‑B alternating pattern inside the filter chamber. This creates an aerobic‑microaerophilic gradient that supports denitrification, increasing total nitrogen removal efficiency by more than 40% compared to using a single media type.

Easy Installation & Maintenance – Save Time and Effort

The cylindrical shape and built‑in handle make installation quick and easy. Fish farms can simply place the pillars into the filter chamber, while garden ponds can use a suspended (hoist) mounting method. The integrated structure means you no longer need to disassemble multiple layers of different media – simply lift out each pillar and rinse it.

> Important: Always rinse the pillars with pond water, never tap water. Chlorine in tap water will kill the nitrifying bacteria attached to the media and destroy the biological filter you have worked hard to establish.

Applications: From Commercial Fish Farms to Garden Koi Ponds

The Koi Biological Pillar has a diameter of 15 cm and is available in two heights: 80 cm and 120 cm to suit different filter chamber depths.

- In commercial fish farms, multiple pillars can be arranged into a high‑efficiency biological filtration matrix, handling the heavy load of high‑density koi culture.

- In garden koi ponds, the compact design fits perfectly into the filter compartment. Customer feedback shows that ponds using AC Koi Bio Pillars achieve significantly clearer water, reduced oil film and suspended solids, and improved koi activity and colouration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: How much filtration does a koi pond need?

A: As a rule of thumb, the filtration system should turn over the total pond volume 1–2 times per hour. Koi Biological Pillars can be arranged in different quantities and patterns to suit various water volumes.

Q2: How often should I clean the pillars?

A: Check regularly. The outer mechanical layer may need rinsing every 1–2 weeks depending on waste accumulation. The inner biological core does not need frequent cleaning. Always use pond water for rinsing to protect the beneficial bacteria.

Q3: How should I mix Model A and Model B?

A: We recommend an A‑B‑A‑B alternating arrangement inside the filter chamber. This creates an aerobic‑microaerophilic gradient that promotes denitrification and improves overall filtration efficiency.

Q4: How long do the pillars last?

A: High‑quality media last for many years. The spiral mat is durable and can be rinsed repeatedly. The inner core material is structurally stable and does not require frequent replacement. Normal maintenance is simply rinsing the outer layer when needed.
