For every aquarist, the phrase "water before fish" is familiar. Yet in reality, over 80% of ornamental fish deaths stem from poor water quality management — specifically the silent buildup of ammonia (NH₃/NH₄⁺) and nitrite (NO₂⁻).

 

An aquarium is a closed miniature ecosystem. 2. What Kind of Filter Media Do Nitrifying Bacteria Need?

 

Nitrifying bacteria are notoriously picky microorganisms. Biologically, they must attach to solid surfaces to perform nitrification; they cannot function freely in the water column.
